Frequently asked

Browse our catalog, find tiles you like, and click "Request Quote" on any product. We'll contact you within 24 hours to confirm availability, pricing, and delivery. You can also call us directly at +251 962 444 466 or visit our showroom in Addis Ababa.
We recommend collection from our Addis Ababa showroom. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are heavy and fragile — improper handling during transport can cause chips, cracks, or breakage, and we want your tiles to arrive in perfect Grade 1 condition. Our team will carefully pack your order so you can transport it safely. If you need assistance arranging a trusted vehicle or porter, we are happy to advise.
Ceramic tiles are fired at lower temperatures and absorb 3–7% water — great for interior walls and light floors. Porcelain tiles are fired at 1,200–1,300°C, absorb less than 0.5% water, and are much stronger. Porcelain is suitable for floors, outdoor use, and commercial spaces. Visit our "About Ceramics" page for a full comparison.
Click on any product and use the Area Calculator below the product details. Enter your room dimensions (length × width) and we'll calculate the m² needed plus recommend adding 10–15% extra for cuts and waste. You can also call us and we'll calculate it for you.

Yes — Hullu Ceramics stocks only Grade 1 tiles. This means perfect color consistency, exact dimensions (±0.5mm tolerance), and no visible defects. We do not sell Grade 2 or Grade 3 tiles. Our Indian and Chinese suppliers are ISO 9001/14001 certified manufacturers.
Interior designers and architects can register for our Designer Program. Benefits include: high-resolution texture downloads for presentations, RAR files for 3D rendering software, and 3% commission on every sale you refer. Approval within 24 hours. Register under "For Designers" in the menu.
Start with a clean, level, and dry surface. Use a polymer-modified tile adhesive spread with a notched trowel. Press each tile firmly and use spacers (2–3 mm for floors, 1.5 mm for walls) to keep grout joints even. Allow adhesive to cure 24 hours before grouting. Apply grout with a rubber float, wiping off excess before it hardens. Seal the grout after 72 hours for moisture resistance. For large-format tiles (60×60 cm and above), a back-butter coat on the tile is also recommended.
For daily cleaning, use warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner — avoid bleach or acidic cleaners on glazed tiles as they can dull the surface. For grout stains, a mild baking-soda paste works well. Re-seal grout lines every 1–2 years in wet areas like bathrooms. For polished porcelain, use a non-abrasive microfibre mop. Avoid dragging heavy furniture directly on tiled floors — use felt pads. Do not use a steam mop on unsealed tiles as it can penetrate the grout and cause cracking over time.

Everything about ceramics

From ancient history to modern manufacturing. Compare local Ethiopian, Indian and Chinese origins.

🏺
Definition
Ceramic tiles are flat pieces of fired clay used to cover floors, walls and surfaces. Made from natural clay, sand, and minerals, fired at extremely high temperatures.
💪
Durability
High-quality tiles can last 50–100 years. Resist water, fire, scratches and chemicals. Ideal for Ethiopian climates and bathrooms.
🌡️
Types
Standard ceramic, porcelain (denser, more water-resistant), terracotta (rustic), quarry tile (heavy-duty), mosaic (decorative). Porcelain is the premium choice.
💧
Water Absorption
Standard absorbs 3–7% — fine for interior. Porcelain absorbs less than 0.5% — ideal for outdoor and wet rooms in Ethiopia's rainy season.
PEI Rating
PEI 1 — walls only. PEI 2 — light traffic. PEI 3 — residential. PEI 4 — heavy traffic. PEI 5 — commercial. Choose appropriately.
🌿
Eco-Friendly
Natural materials. No VOCs. Hypoallergenic. Recyclable as construction aggregate. Sustainable choice for Ethiopian construction.
⛏️
Step 1
Raw Material Extraction
Mining clay, feldspar, silica sand and kaolin. Indian Rajasthan clay produces bright consistent colors. Quality of materials determines tile quality.
⚗️
Step 2
Mixing
Materials ground to fine powder, mixed with water, spray-dried to consistent granules. Computerized batching ensures consistency.
🔲
Step 3
Pressing
Pressed at 200–500 kg/cm² to form bisque body. Higher pressure for porcelain creates denser tiles. Trimmed before firing.
🎨
Step 4
Glazing
Glass-like coating from silica, alumina, colorants. Digital inkjet printing replicates marble, wood, stone with precision.
🔥
Step 5
Firing
1,000–1,300°C kiln. Porcelain at 1,200–1,300°C vitrifies clay. Process takes 40–60 min. Even 20°C variation matters.
Step 6
Quality Control
Auto-checked dimensions, defects, color, flatness. Grade 1 (best), Grade 2 (minor defects), Grade 3 (significant). Hullu only sells Grade 1.

Ceramic, Porcelain & More

Not all tiles are the same. Here's a simple breakdown of every type — what they are, what they're good at, and where to use them. No confusing jargon.

Ceramic Tiles

The most common and affordable tile. Made from natural clay mixed with minerals, pressed into shape, glazed, and fired at around 1,000-1,100°C. The surface has a protective glass-like coating (glaze) that gives it color and pattern.

✅ Affordable · Easy to cut · Huge variety of designs · Good for walls and light floors

❌ Absorbs some water · Less strong than porcelain · Can chip if hit hard

🏠 Best for: Bathroom walls, kitchen walls, bedroom floors

💧 Water Absorption: 3-7% (not for wet outdoor areas)
🔨 Strength: Moderate — fine for homes
🎨 Look: Glossy or matte glaze over reddish/brown body
📏 Common Sizes: 20×20, 30×30, 40×40 cm
FULL BODY COLOR

Porcelain Tiles

The premium choice. Made from finer, purer clay (kaolin) and fired at much higher temperatures (1,200-1,300°C). This makes them incredibly dense, nearly waterproof, and much stronger than regular ceramic. The color often runs through the entire tile body.

✅ Nearly waterproof · Very strong · Frost-proof · Long lifespan (50+ years) · Outdoor-ready

❌ More expensive · Harder to cut · Heavier

🏠 Best for: Floors, outdoor areas, bathrooms, commercial spaces

💧 Water Absorption: Less than 0.5% (nearly zero)
🔨 Strength: High — commercial grade
🎨 Look: Same color throughout body, realistic stone/wood finishes
📏 Common Sizes: 60×60, 80×80, 60×120 cm
BASE BODY COLOR LAYER two layers pressed together →

Double Charged Tiles

A special type of vitrified tile made by pressing two layers together — a thick base body and a thinner colored top layer (usually 3-4mm of colored material on top of a regular tile body). This gives a rich, consistent color on the surface without making the whole tile expensive.

✅ Consistent surface color · Strong · More affordable than full-body porcelain · Good for heavy traffic

❌ Top layer can wear over decades · Chips reveal different color underneath · Not for extreme outdoor use

🏠 Best for: Living rooms, hallways, offices, shops

💧 Water Absorption: Less than 1%
🔨 Strength: Good — similar to porcelain
🎨 How it's made: Two layers pressed together, then fired
📏 Common Sizes: 60×60, 80×80 cm
VITRIFIED BODY DIGITAL PRINT + GLASS LAYER

GVT — Glazed Vitrified Tiles

Vitrified tiles with a glass coating (glaze) on top. The design is printed digitally using inkjet technology — just like a printer — so patterns can look exactly like real marble, wood, or stone. The vitrified body underneath is strong and waterproof.

✅ Endless design options · Looks like natural materials · Waterproof body · Smooth finish

❌ Glaze can scratch over time · Not as strong as full-body porcelain · Slippery when wet

🏠 Best for: Bedrooms, living rooms, indoor walls

💧 Water Absorption: Less than 0.5%
🔨 Strength: Good — vitrified body
🎨 How it's made: Digital inkjet print + glass glaze on vitrified body
📏 Common Sizes: 60×60, 60×120 cm
MIRROR FINISH

PGVT — Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles

The luxury finish of the tile world. GVT tiles that have been machine-polished to a mirror-like shine after glazing. The polishing removes tiny imperfections and creates a surface so smooth it reflects light like a mirror. Replicates the look of polished marble at a fraction of the cost.

✅ Gorgeous mirror finish · Makes rooms look bigger · Luxurious look · Waterproof

❌ Shows every footprint · Very slippery when wet · Scratches more visible · Needs regular cleaning

🏠 Best for: Hotel lobbies, formal living rooms, showrooms

💧 Water Absorption: Less than 0.5%
🔨 Strength: Good — vitrified body
🎨 How it's made: GVT + machine polishing for mirror finish
📏 Common Sizes: 60×60, 80×80, 60×120 cm

What Quality Grade Means

Tiles are sorted into quality grades after manufacturing. Understanding these helps you know what you're paying for.

1
Grade 1 — Premium (Hullu Standard)
Perfect color consistency, exact dimensions (±0.5mm), no visible defects. These are the tiles you see in our catalog. Used for visible areas in homes and premium projects.
2
Grade 2 — Standard
Minor color variation between tiles, slight size differences (±1mm), small surface imperfections acceptable. Often sold at a discount. Fine for utility rooms, basements, or budget projects.
3
Grade 3 — Economy
Noticeable defects, uneven glaze, visible size differences. These are rarely seen in retail — typically sold in bulk for construction fill or areas that won't be visible.
💡 How to check grade yourself: Take two tiles and lay them face-to-face. Grade 1 tiles will fit perfectly together with no gaps or rocking. Run your hand across the surface — Grade 1 feels perfectly smooth with no bumps or pits.
